Bid-Ask Volume Footprint Charts on Tradovate
Tradovate has a built-in chart style called Bid-Ask Volume that turns an ordinary price bar into a footprint showing how much traded at the bid versus the ask at every price level. Here's what it shows and how to turn it on.
Ever wanted to see who's actually hitting the bids and lifting the offers inside a single candle? Tradovate has a chart style built for exactly that. It's called Bid-Ask Volume, and it turns an ordinary price bar into a footprint, a stack of numbers showing how much traded at the bid versus the ask at every price level. No paid add-on, no third-party plugin. It ships with the web platform as one of the built-in chart styles.
Most traders never find it because it lives behind the same little control you'd use to flip between candlesticks and bars. Here's what it shows, how to switch it on, and the two things that keep it from rendering.
What the Footprint Actually Shows
A normal candle tells you open, high, low, and close. A footprint splits each bar into price rows and shows the traded volume at each one, sell volume that hit the bid on one side, buy volume that lifted the ask on the other. Subtract one from the other and you get delta: positive when buyers were more aggressive, negative when sellers were.
That's the whole point. Instead of guessing where size changed hands, you read it off the bar. Clusters of heavy ask volume near a high often mark where buyers got exhausted; a fat bid print at a low can flag where sellers gave up. It's the same order-flow read you'd chase on the SuperDOM ladder, except frozen onto the chart so you can study it after the fact.
Before You Switch It On
Two requirements trip people up, so get them out of the way first.
Real-time market data. The footprint is built from tick-by-tick bid and ask prints. With delayed or missing data the cells come up blank, you'll see the bars but no numbers. On a personal account you subscribe to the exchange feed yourself; on a prop or evaluation account the firm controls your data, so check your firm's current rules. Data entitlements and fees vary by exchange and account type. If you're not sure your feed is live, sort that out first.
Zoom. Footprint numbers need room. On a wide, zoomed-out chart the cells collapse into an unreadable smear. Keep it on a short timeframe and zoom in tight.
Turn On the Bid-Ask Volume Chart
Open a Chart
Open the Chart module in the Tradovate web app and load your instrument.
Open the Chart-Style Control
Hover your cursor near the top of the chart. A row of quick buttons appears, one of them is the chart style (chart type) selector, the same control you'd use to switch between candlesticks and bars. Click it.
Select Bid-Ask Volume
In the list of built-in styles, pick Bid-Ask Volume. The bars redraw as footprints, with volume printed at each price level. By default you'll see semi-transparent candles with the bid/ask numbers inside them.
Zoom In to a Low Timeframe
Drop to a short timeframe and zoom the chart in until each bar is wide enough to read. If the numbers overlap or vanish, you're too far zoomed out, widen the bars until every price row is legible.
Tune the Footprint Display
Double-click any bar profile to open the plotter customization settings. You can toggle Bar Histograms, set a Constant Width, and turn on Opaque Volume for solid cells instead of faint ones. There's also a bid-ask display mode you can switch, for example, from separate bid/ask columns to a single Delta view that colors each cell by net buying or selling. Set it once and the chart remembers it.

When the Footprint Comes Up Blank
If the bars are there but the cells are empty, it's almost always a data problem, not a settings one. Confirm your market-data subscription is live for that exchange and that the symbol isn't showing delayed. Then zoom in, a footprint on a daily chart with a month of bars on screen has nowhere to draw the numbers, so it hides them. Fix the data, tighten the zoom, and the prints show up.
Reading order flow tells you where to act, but you still have to click the order in time. If you'd rather have your TradingView signals fire into Tradovate automatically while you watch the footprint, PickMyTrade automates your Tradovate execution.
The Bid-Ask Volume chart isn't a full-blown professional footprint suite, and it has its quirks, the numbers get cramped at wide zoom, and it leans on a live feed. But for a built-in tool it does the core job well: it shows you the fight between buyers and sellers at each price, no extra software required.
