Tradovate Footprint Chart Blank on Bid-Ask Volume

You switch a chart to Bid-Ask Volume, expecting to read order flow at every price, and instead you get an empty grid. Maybe a couple of moving averages float over blank candles. Maybe the candles are there but there's not a single volume number inside them. Either way, the footprint is useless until you find out why it went dark.

The quick version: a blank Bid-Ask Volume chart is almost always one of two problems. Either you don't have the live market-data entitlement that feeds per-price volume, or the data is flowing fine but the chart's price scale is squeezed so tight the numbers can't render. This guide walks both down in order, plus the prop-account and session-timing edge cases that trip people up.

What a Footprint Chart Actually Needs to Draw

Tradovate's Bid-Ask Volume chart (the footprint, sometimes called volumetric) is a different beast from a plain candlestick. A candlestick only needs open, high, low and close. A footprint has to know how many contracts traded at the bid and at the ask, for every single price level inside every bar. That's a much heavier, tick-level feed.

So when the grid is blank, ask one question before anything else: is real-time order-flow data actually reaching this chart? If the answer is no, no setting on the chart will fix it. Start with the entitlement.

Cause 1: No Real-Time Market-Data Entitlement

This is the top reason, and it's the one the page summary points at. Live charts, SuperDOMs and the Bid-Ask Volume chart all require an active real-time market-data subscription to the exchange that lists the instrument you're watching. Trading NQ or ES? You need the CME real-time package on your account. Without it, you're on delayed or free data, and delayed data doesn't carry the live bid/ask volume a footprint depends on. The candles may still form, but the per-price numbers stay empty.

Here's how to confirm and fix it:

• Open your Tradovate account settings and find the Market Data (or Market Data Subscriptions) section.
• Check whether you have an active real-time subscription for the exchange that lists your instrument. A CME product needs the CME feed, and so on for each exchange.
• If it's missing, add the subscription for that exchange, then log fully out and back in so the entitlement loads.
• Reopen the Bid-Ask Volume chart and let a live session run for a minute. Volume should start filling the price levels.

One tell that you're on delayed data: symbol names often show up in a different colour and quotes lag by several minutes. If that's what you're seeing, the footprint being blank is a symptom of the same root problem, not a separate bug.

Market-data fees vary by exchange and data level, and Tradovate changes the packages from time to time. Check the current pricing in your account before you subscribe rather than trusting an old figure.

Cause 2: The Data Is There, the Scaling Hides It

This one fools a lot of people. The feed is live, the candles are drawing, but there's not a number in sight. That's not missing data. It's the chart deciding it doesn't have room to print.

The rule is simple: volume numbers only appear when there's enough vertical space to show them at the minimum font size. When a single bar holds many price levels and the price scale is zoomed out, the levels get crushed together and the numbers vanish to try to fit the bars. Two settings control this:

• Turn Auto-fit off. With Auto-fit on, the chart keeps compressing to fit the whole range on screen, which is exactly what starves the numbers of space. Find the Auto-fit toggle for the chart and switch it off.
• Rescale the price axis by hand. Move your cursor over the price axis on the right edge of the chart and use your scroll wheel. Scrolling there stretches the vertical scale so each price level gets taller. As the levels open up, the bid/ask numbers reappear.

Expect a trade-off. To read individual price levels clearly you'll be zoomed in fairly tight, which means less time on screen at once. On a fast, wide-ranging instrument the footprint is genuinely hard to read zoomed out, so you're balancing detail against how much history you can see. That's a limitation of the chart, not something you broke.

Cause 3: Legacy Chart Quirk, Force a Refit

Sometimes the volume just doesn't print on first load even with a live feed and sane scaling. The older chart engine has a known habit of not always drawing the volume until you nudge it. The fix is manual: scroll your wheel over the chart to refit it, and the numbers snap in.

If that works once but keeps happening, do a harder reset. Close the Bid-Ask Volume chart, reopen a fresh one, or switch to a different chart style and back to Bid-Ask Volume. On the desktop app, a restart clears rendering state that a refresh won't.

Cause 4: You're Not Actually on the Bid-Ask Volume Style

Worth a ten-second check before you go deeper. Tradovate ships several chart styles, and it's easy to think you selected the footprint when you're still on candlesticks with no per-price data. The available styles include Candlesticks (the default), OHLC, Line on Close, Bid-Ask Volume, Heiken-Ashi, Renko, Point and Figure, and TPO.

Open the chart's style or chart-type selector and confirm Bid-Ask Volume is the one highlighted. If the label doesn't match what you expected, that's your answer. Bid-Ask Volume is the footprint you want for per-price bid/ask breakdown; TPO is a different market-profile view.

Cause 5: Prop or Evaluation Account, the Firm Owns the Data

If you're trading a funded or evaluation account from a prop firm, you don't control the market-data feed. The firm does. When their data package isn't enabled on your account, or hasn't been provisioned yet, the footprint stays blank and there's no self-serve subscription you can buy through Tradovate to fix it.

Don't burn an hour fiddling with chart settings in that case. Contact the prop firm's support and ask them to confirm real-time market data is enabled on your account. The requirements and timing vary by firm and account size, so check your firm's current rules.

Cause 6: Thin Session or Market Closed

A footprint only paints where trades actually happened. Load it deep in the overnight lull or on a market holiday and the newest candles can look almost empty simply because little to nothing traded. That's not a fault. Pull the chart up during an active session, or scroll back to a busy period, and the volume fills in. Rule this out before you assume the data is broken, especially if the rest of your platform looks healthy.

When to Contact Support

You've confirmed an active real-time subscription for the right exchange, turned Auto-fit off, rescaled the price axis, checked you're on the Bid-Ask Volume style, and it's mid-session with plenty of trading, yet the footprint is still blank. At that point it's worth raising with Tradovate support (or your prop firm if it's a funded account). Tell them the instrument, that other live windows like the SuperDOM are or aren't updating, and that the Bid-Ask Volume chart renders empty specifically. If your candlestick charts and quotes are dead too, this is a broader data problem.

Reading Order Flow Is Only Half the Job

A footprint tells you where volume traded. Acting on it fast and consistently is a separate problem, and that's where clicking bid-ask levels by hand tends to fall apart. If your edge comes from an order-flow or price signal you can define, you can route it straight to Tradovate instead of babysitting the chart.
