Tradovate Volume Profile Indicator Not Working
The Volume Profile either never draws or won't disappear once you turn it off. In nearly every case the data is fine and the chart just didn't repaint, here's the redraw trick that clears it in seconds.
You add the Volume Profile to your chart, hit save, and nothing shows up. Or worse, you turn it off and the histogram just sits there stuck on the right edge. Either way, the profile is one of Tradovate's more temperamental indicators, and it was still acting up in 2026. Here's the good news before you start: in nearly every case the indicator isn't broken and your data is fine. The chart just didn't repaint the profile after you changed something. Force a redraw and it snaps back. This guide covers the two flavors you'll hit, the profile that never appears and the one that won't disappear, the settings that quietly hide POC and Value Area, and how to keep a flaky indicator out of your trades.
Quick Checklist for a Broken Volume Profile
- Force a redraw with the POC toggle, open the Volume Profile settings, check or uncheck POC, and click Apply. This is the single fastest fix for a profile that's stuck or won't hide.
- Remove and re-add the indicator, if it never draws after you save, delete it and add it fresh from the Indicators menu.
- Check what's toggled on, POC, Value Area, and the developing lines each have their own switch, so a “missing” profile is often just switched off.
- Refresh the chart, press F5 on web, or restart the desktop app, to clear a one-off rendering hiccup.
- Try the other chart engine, the current Chart module and the older Legacy Chart render profiles differently, so test the one you're not using.
- Confirm your data feed is live, no market-data subscription or a delayed (orange) symbol means little or no volume to build the profile from.
What "Volume Profile Not Working" Usually Means
The Volume Profile draws a horizontal histogram of how much volume traded at each price, with the POC (Point of Control) marking the busiest price and the Value Area shading the band where roughly 70% of the volume changed hands. It's calculated live off your market data. When people say it's “not working,” they almost always mean one of two things.
The first is a profile that never appears. You pick Volume Profile from the indicator list, adjust a setting or two, click save, and the chart comes back with no histogram at all. It doesn't show on a 5-minute chart, it doesn't show on any timeframe, and reopening the chart settings sometimes doesn't even list it. Switching browsers or the desktop app doesn't help. That's a save-and-render failure, not a data outage.
The second is a profile that won't turn off. You toggle the indicator's visibility from on to off, expecting the histogram to vanish, and the current day's profile stubbornly stays pinned to the right side of the chart. The switch says off, the profile says otherwise. Both problems trace back to the same root: the chart isn't repainting when its state changes. The fix for both is to make it repaint.
Top Causes of a Volume Profile That Won't Render in 2026
1. The chart didn't repaint after a settings change
This is the big one. You change a setting, or flip the indicator on or off, and the chart keeps showing its old state. A profile that was drawn stays drawn even after you hide it, and a profile you just enabled doesn't paint until something forces the chart to recalculate. It's a stale-render bug, which is exactly why the POC-toggle trick below works.
2. The indicator saved into a broken state
Sometimes the profile is applied but arrives half-initialized. It's on the chart in name but produces nothing, and no amount of scrolling or zooming brings it out. When an indicator lands in this state, nudging its settings won't help, it needs to be removed and added again from scratch.

3. The display elements are switched off
A profile can render and still look like it's missing pieces. POC, Value Area, the value-area high and low, and the developing lines are all independent toggles. Turn the histogram opacity way down or switch off the parts you care about, and the profile technically works but shows almost nothing, which reads as “broken” when it's really just near-invisible.
4. You're on the chart engine that's glitching
Tradovate runs a newer Chart module (the default) alongside an older Legacy Chart. They don't render indicators with the same code, so a redraw bug that hits the profile on one engine can be completely absent on the other. If the profile is fighting you on the current Chart, test the same symbol on Legacy Chart before you spend an hour on settings.
5. There's no live volume to build from
The profile is only as good as the data behind it. Without an active exchange market-data subscription, or on a symbol running on delayed data, often flagged by an orange symbol name, there may be little or no volume for the indicator to plot. A thin or empty profile on a delayed feed isn't a bug in the indicator; it's a data feed to fix first.

How to Fix the Volume Profile in Tradovate: Step-by-Step
Fix 1: Force a Redraw with the POC Toggle
This clears the stuck-profile and won't-hide problems, and it's worth trying first because it takes about five seconds.
Open the profile's settings
Double-click the Volume Profile on the chart, or open the chart's configure/gear icon and pick the profile, to open its settings.
Toggle the POC checkbox
Find the POC (Point of Control) option and check or uncheck it, it doesn't matter which way, you're just changing the state.
Click Apply
Click Apply.
Let it redraw
The chart recalculates and repaints. A profile that was stuck on the right edge clears, and one that wasn't drawing paints correctly.
If you wanted POC visible, toggle it back and Apply again, the Apply click is what forces the redraw.

Fix 2: Remove the Indicator and Add It Back
If the profile never appears after saving, or the POC toggle does nothing, the indicator saved into a bad state and needs a clean re-add.
Open the indicator list
Open the indicator list on the chart (the Indicators icon on the chart toolbar, or the chart's configure menu).
Delete the existing Volume Profile
Use the trash/remove control next to it. Removing an indicator can't be undone, so you're starting fresh on purpose.
Refresh the chart
Press F5 on the web platform, or close and reopen the desktop app.
Add Volume Profile back
Add it back from the Indicators menu, leave the defaults for now, and confirm it draws before you re-customize it.
Adding it back on defaults first tells you whether the indicator itself is fine. Once it's drawing, layer your POC, Value Area, and type preferences back in one at a time.
Fix 3: Check the Display Toggles
If the profile draws but looks incomplete, the pieces you're missing are almost certainly switched off rather than broken.
Open the Volume Profile settings
Open the Volume Profile settings.
Enable the elements you expect to see
Enable POC, Value Area, value-area high/low, and any developing lines.
Check the histogram width and opacity
Check the histogram width and opacity aren't set so low the bars are invisible.
Click Apply
Click Apply, which also triggers the redraw from Fix 1 as a bonus.

Fix 4: Switch Chart Engines and Refresh
When one engine keeps glitching, move the problem to the other.
Note your current engine
Note whether you're on the current Chart module or Legacy Chart.
Load the same symbol on the other engine
Load the same symbol on the other engine and re-add the Volume Profile there.
Keep it there or refresh and re-add
If it behaves on the alternate engine, keep it there for that symbol, or refresh your original chart and re-add the indicator to reset the render.
Menu wording shifts between updates, so if an option isn't where you expect, check the current Indicators and settings menus rather than assuming it was removed.
Fix 5: Confirm Your Market Data
Rule out the data feed before you keep fighting the indicator.
Check for a delayed symbol
Check that the symbol isn't showing as delayed, an orange symbol name is the usual tell.
Confirm your data subscription
Make sure you have an active exchange market-data subscription for that product.
Check with your firm on a prop account
On a prop or evaluation account, remember market data is often controlled by the firm, so a data gap there may need the firm to enable it, not you.
Once live volume is flowing, rebuild the profile and it should populate properly.
Troubleshooting Table
| Symptom | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Profile won't hide after toggling visibility off | Chart didn't repaint the current session's profile | Settings → check/uncheck POC → Apply |
| Profile never appears after saving | Indicator saved into a broken/half-loaded state | Remove it, refresh, and re-add from the Indicators menu |
| Doesn't show on any timeframe | Stale render or bad indicator state | POC-toggle redraw first, then remove and re-add |
| Histogram shows but POC/Value Area missing | Those elements are toggled off | Enable POC/Value Area in settings and Apply |
| Works on one chart type but not the other | Different render engines (Chart vs Legacy) | Use the engine that renders it, or refresh and re-add |
| Profile is empty or paper-thin | No live volume, delayed or unsubscribed data | Fix the market-data feed, then rebuild the profile |
Keep a Flaky Indicator Out of Your Execution
A Volume Profile that won't redraw is annoying when you're reading the market and a real problem when you're supposed to be acting on it, a POC or Value Area edge that isn't on screen is an entry you can miss. PickMyTrade keeps execution independent of whether Tradovate's chart decided to repaint:
- Build your levels where they stay put, define POC, Value Area, and key prices in TradingView, which stores them server-side across every device.
- Alerts fire from those levels, a price reaching your line triggers an alert instead of waiting on Tradovate to re-render an indicator.
- Automated execution to Tradovate, that alert becomes a live order on your account with no manual clicks at the moment it matters.
- Multi-Account Sync, mirror the same entry across several Tradovate accounts at once, so a stuck chart never leaves one account out of step.

Most of the time it's a render glitch, not a data problem. The indicator is applied but the chart didn't repaint it. Open the Volume Profile settings, check or uncheck the POC option and click Apply to force a redraw. If it never draws at all, remove the indicator and add it back from the Indicators menu.
Open the profile's settings, toggle the POC (Point of Control) checkbox on or off, and click Apply. Changing any visible setting and applying it forces the chart to recalculate and repaint the profile, which clears a stale or half-drawn state.
Turning the visibility off sometimes fails to clear the current session's profile from the right edge of the chart. Go into the Volume Profile settings, check or uncheck POC, and click Apply. That forces the visibility state to update and the leftover profile disappears.
It's in the chart's Indicators menu, opened from the indicators icon on the chart toolbar. Some builds also expose a session or drawing-based volume profile, so if you can't find it under one menu, check the other. Once it's on the chart, double-click it or use the chart's configure/gear icon to open its settings.
Yes. The profile is built from traded volume, so it needs live exchange data. If your symbol shows as delayed (often flagged by an orange symbol name) or you have no market-data subscription, the profile can render empty or thin. Confirm your data feed before assuming the indicator is broken.
Those elements are toggled separately in the profile settings. POC, Value Area, and the developing lines each have their own on/off switch. Open the settings, enable the ones you want, and click Apply. Applying the change also forces the redraw that brings them back.
It can. The newer chart module and the older Legacy Chart render the profile with different engines, so a glitch on one is sometimes absent on the other. If the profile won't behave on the current Chart module, load your symbol on Legacy Chart (or vice versa) as a quick test.
The redraw and won't-hide behavior has come and gone across platform updates, and as of 2026 there's no guaranteed permanent fix. The POC-toggle redraw and the remove-and-re-add steps are the reliable ways to clear it when it shows up.
